Know Your Body Shape, Shop with Confidence

Shopping for clothing can feel like fumbling around in the dark when you don’t know what looks best on you. You can wind up buying something out of frustration or desperation instead of excitement and enthusiasm over the perfect find. Not all styles should be worn by everybody as fit and shape are extremely important in how a garment will look on a particular body shape. As you begin to become more familiar with what works best for your body shape, you’ll begin to look for moderate variations of the same style type but in different fabrics and prints.

Knowing your body shape, and what styles look best on you, can really help when shopping for the fashion choices that are going to work the best for each individual person. Many of you are probably familiar with the apple or pear shapes because the majority of us fall in those two categories, and we’ve added a few others we think will help you to more clearly indentify your shape and help you choose the styles that will look the best on you. The goal of indentifying one’s body shape is not merely to categorize, but rather to provide you with strategies and tips that help your body look proportionate. When your body is presented in a proportionate way in the style that is designed for your body type, you will look your absolute best.

THE KITE – The Kite body shape has broad shoulders with proportionally narrow hips and less a defined waistline. Shoulders that are wider than the hips are most complimented by simple and moderate lines on the top and straight skirts or pants with interesting details or prints. Our Carlina set is a must have for all Kite shapes. The top has floral embroidery around the neck to bring the focus in and off the shoulders, while the fun printed crops draw the eye down. I would also recommend the Orla set for the Kite figure as well.

THE RULER - The Ruler body shape has the same measurement for the shoulders and the hips with a waist measurement that is close to them. The Ruler figure type tends to look best in structured tops and jackets that help create or enhance your waistline. Try our Kinkaid Blouse for a flirty peplum at the waist that floats gently away from the body, and adds the look of a more defined waist line. Or try our structured Kori Blouse with its semi-banded waist with ruching for the same waist-enhancing look.

THE PEAR – The Pear body type has hips that are broader than their busts and shoulders, and have a thick waist. Any details at the shoulders that help to extend the shoulder line, such as seaming detail or ruching, are good because they keep the shoulders and hips balanced. Empire waist seaming is great because it draws the attention to the narrowest part of your waist, which also makes your longs look longer. Try the Cora Top or Dardenne Blouse as each offers shirring and a flattering empire waist.

THE HOURGLASS – The Hourglass body type has balanced shoulders and hips that are the same width but has a much smaller waist. Accentuating the waist is the key to giving the Hourglass its shape. Soft, gently gathered fabrics are less likely to look bulky. V-necks are great because they add visual length to the neck area. Choosing straight skirts will help to keep the bottom portion of the body in balance with the top. Try the Ella V-Neck Tee or the Evans Hoodie as both elongate the neckline beautifully.

THE APPLE – The Apple body type has a round figure with very little difference between the shoulders, waist, or hips. The Apple figure type looks best in loose, unstructured designs. Avoid anything that brings attention to the waist. Choose wide legged denim or trousers to help balance out the body. Straight silhouetted dresses are great for the Apple shape. Try our Leo Dress which has a straight line silhouette and pair it with the Leo Cardigan to cover the tummy area if you feel it needs covering. Our Darcie Dress or Demetria Dress would also work wonderfully!

While these descriptions are meant to guide you, they are not meant to limit your choices, but rather to allow you to choose styles most complimentary to your own body type. If you have any questions as to what other styles would look best for you, I encourage you to contact us with any fit, style or sizing questions as well as with any fashion concerns you may have. We are happy and eager to help you find the styles that will work best for you. Coming soon, I’ll be making further recommendations based on the above body shapes as I’ve defined them. We strive to offer you the best in fashion choice, fit, style and advice. All for YOU, and only by MiB.

As Always, Happy Shopping!
